Another one of learning ideas that was born out of our personal experience.
I needed something with which we can revise and practice spellings on the go. For last few years I had been personally tied up with taking care of ailing elders, so time was a big constraint for me when it came to teaching my little one.
First I tried to used Alphabet edushapes to practice spelling, but soon realized its not serving the purpose.
It was messy and time consuming to look for alphabets and then form words. Sometimes a word would need same letters, that wont be available in edushapes.
So I was again left to figure out an effective way of doing it . I decided to make alphabet cards for this. So I designed a file containing colorful capital and small alphabets. But then realized that by just making simple cards for letters , am not addressing the root cause of problem with edushapes i e the amount of time spent in searching for a letter.
So to organize the letters I decided to make a flip calendar. It posed a new challenge printers were ready to print it and bind it but they were not willing to do it for such small pieces. The individual cards were just 1.5″ by 1″. According to them it was very labour intensive process to punch and bind such small pieces and at the same time maintaining the order of alphabets
But I was determined to get it done as I was pretty sure this will be a great value add for my daughter’s language learning.
So I got it printed and punched from the printing shop. Then made the flip card calendar myself. It was too much effort but it was worth every minute I spent on it while designing, troubling the printers and making the calendar.
I was amazed at the quality professional work it turned out to be. My daughter was so pleased with it.
It was ………..
So first immediate use was to practice spellings. we would take turns to spell a word by flipping the cards.
And you bet we were
practicing spellings in this manner.
Next thing we learnt was making words using prefix and suffixes.
Here are few pictures of same:
- Art becomes Artist
2) Form words ending with “and”
3) We also turned it into a game “How many words ending with ‘AN’ can you spell in a minute?”
4) Then we moved to next level
“Make new words by adding suffixes to given word ”
Do comment if you like the concept and have some views to share. I would happy to hear from fellow parents and teachers.
