Today I will write about a new tool I have made for my daughter.
To begin with like all parents I also introduced flash cards. So got this whole bunch of ESL flash cards printed in the hope that my little one would learn words.
She did for some time, but then soon lost interest.
And I was left to figure out a new way to make her learn spelling.
That’s when I decided to make a desk calendar for her , that I can use to display word of the day.
Also use it for practicing spelling words upto 7 letters.
Its an easy tool as she just needs to flip cards to spell the word that I dictate to her.
Instead of writing the dictated words, this made practicing spelling more fun.
We also started playing “guess the word” by filling the missing letters. It was an activity her friends also enjoyed , kids consider it a game where they are giving each other challenge.
Fill the missing letter to form word “WONDER”.
Or How do you spell “SPECIAL”.
We have also extended it to practice finding smaller words from given word.
So from world beauty , she would figure out “be” “bat” , “bet” , “beat” , “but”, “eat.” “ate”,”yet” I could see it was much easy and more fun doing this with this colorful calendar.
We also practice suffix and prefix .
so “new” can become “renew”.
And “test” can become “retest”
And yes we did prefix too, finding practice words took little bit of effort on my part.
As I thought of introducing her to anagrams my alphabet cards came to the rescue once more.
We would form a word and then rearrange it to form a new word.
So “baker” would become “brake” or “break”.
And “below” would become “bowel” or “elbow”.

I hope to figure out more usage of this calendar with my daughter and post about it here soon.
